Lauren Tisbo Clears 1.60 m to Win $35,000 PwC Cup

Lauren Tisbo Clears 1.60 m to Win $35,000 PwC Cup

July 5, 2013; Calgary, Alberta, Canada – The action continued today in the ‘North American’ Tournament with three international competitions held in two rings. Representing the United States, Lauren Tisbo and her horse Roundthorn Madios rode to victory in the $35,000 PwC Cup, jumping a clear round at 1.60 meters. The $35,000 Progress Energy Canada Cup 1.50m went to Tisbo’s USA teammate, Christine McCrea with Romantovich Take One. The All Canada ring saw USA rider Abigail McArdle and her mount Cosma 20 ride to victory in the $33,000 Zoetis Horse Health Care Cup, topping out at 1.45 meters.

The ‘North American’ Tournament showcases some of the best show jumping riders and horses from around the Americas. Held annually in Spruce Meadows, 2013’s ‘North American’ Tournament takes place from July 3-7th. Alongside the competitions held today, still to come in this year’s Tournament are the $200,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup on Saturday, July 6, and the $140,000 Cenovus Energy Classic Derby, on July 7.

Tisbo faced off against 19 other competitors in today’s $35,000 PwC Cup. The course, designed by Anthony D’Ambrosio of New York, proved difficult for many of the riders. Only two riders went clear in the first round, Reed Kessler and Cylana representing the USA, and Lauren Tisbo with her 11-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding by Condios x Clover Hill Roundthorn Madios also representing the USA.

“I thought it was going to be difficult,” Tisbo said of the course. “Anthony usually builds courses that don’t allow for a whole lot of clears, but a nice number usually. There were plenty of questions there, and the water jump was in there. I expected there to be more than two though. You just had to know your horse really well and know what his strengths are.”

As the jump-off got underway, Kessler rode first, pulling a rail at the first fence leaving her with four faults and a fast round of 39.76 seconds. Riding into the ring at a steady pace, Tisbo and Roundthorn Madios rode a clear round in a time of 41.20 seconds, leading Tisbo to her second international win at Spruce Meadows.

Commenting on Roundthorn Madios, Tisbo said: “He doesn’t have a huge, huge stride. He’s careful, but he likes when you can gallop him up to the jumps. He’s exceeding my expectations in the parts of the course that I think he’s going to struggle with. Those are all signs for me that make me feel very confident going into a class like the Queen’s Cup on Saturday.”

Tisbo has been riding Roundthorn Madios for six months. He only recently moved up to the 1.60 meter class, with today’s competition serving as a test to see if he is prepared for the bigger classes. He is owned by Tequestrian Farms LLC.
