Lauren Tisbo Scores Second in $50,000 Lafarge Cup

July 5, 2013; Calgary, Alberta, Canada – The action at the ‘North American’ Tournament, currently underway in Alberta, continued today with Lauren Tisbo and Catharina 9 riding their way into second place in the $50,000 Lafarge Cup.

The ‘North American’ Tournament showcases some of the best show jumping riders and horses from around the Americas. Held annually in Spruce Meadows, 2013’s ‘North American’ Tournament takes place from July 3-7th. Alongside the $50,000 Lafarge Cup held today, still to come in this year’s Tournament are the $200,000 ATCO Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup on Saturday, July 6, and the $140,000 Cenovus Energy Classic Derby, on July 7.

Lauren Tisbo and her mount Catharina 9, a nine-year-old Mecklenburg mare by Cellestial x Monsum and owned by Tequestrian Farms LLC, represented the United States. Squaring off against fellow US rider Reed Kessler and her horse Wolf S, a 10-year-old Warmblood gelding by Numero Uno x Peter Pan, both riders prepared themselves for the gruelling course. Designed by Anthony D’Ambrosio of New York, the course was made more difficult by the weather conditions, with dark skies and driving rain hindering visibility.

The difficulties that the course presented were evident as riders pushed their horses around. Out of 24 entries, only two riders jumped a clear round. Tisbo, astride her new mount Catharina 9, pulled a rail at jump 10b leaving them with four faults. Kessler jumped a clear round, securing her place in first at the end of the Lafarge Cup.

Commenting on the event, Kessler said: “I’ve spent a lot of time working on control with him [Wolf S] and haven’t stepped into that next phase yet of speed. That’s totally the next phase still. I tried to be fast where I knew I could be quick, the first few jumps, and doing eight (strides) into the combination, and then bringing it home clear at the end of the course. Lauren is also on a new horse. It’s a fantastic horse and another star in the making. But we were kind of in the same boat, wagering how fast exactly we had to go.” Third place in the Lafarge Cup went to Irish rider Darragh Kerins (IRL) on E Muze Yek.
